BADL as a semester project for class has reached its terminus and we are now looking toward the future of the project. We're seeking server space and researching alternative digital library software options. The current collection, which was configured using Greenstone, is beautiful but the Windows version of Greenstone we're using makes the server unstable, so we're looking into alternatives. If you're curious about the backstory of BADL, here is the PowerPoint we developed for class. We will also post screen shots soon so you can see how it's going and how great everyone's work looks in the library! We're still accepting contributions from local artists on a rolling basis-- click on the links in the menu bar to your right to see how to submit work.

Begin the Beguine

We've begun uploading files and adding the metadata to the library and are now looking for additional contributions on a rolling basis. Please follow the directions in the sidebar to send us work! Music, film/video, born-digital work, fiction, non-fiction, poetry, painting, drawing, sculpture, jewelry, photography... etc. etc. etc. are all welcome!

For those who are interested, we're using Greenstone as our digital library software, but we're tweaking the layout. Here are some other Greenstone Digital Libraries. For our metadata schema, we're using a custom combination of Dublin Core and VRA to embrace all the different media we'll be archiving.

Deadline Extension

We are extending the deadline for BADL contributions to 3/1.

We are also relaxing the requirement about how many submissions we need from each person. We would like to get as many contributions as possible from each artist, but we don't need 5 books or 10 paintings-- any number of things you would like to send is fine. Remember that this is a library, though, not a magazine-- do not send individual poems/stories, but instead books/chapbooks. We need a certain "critical mass" of items to make a successful library in the next few weeks, but you are welcome to continue sending contributions after 3/1 as well. Like a traditional brick-and-mortar library, we can't open our doors with just a few books, but we want as much stuff as possible so we can represent the Buffalo community accurately.

Questions about the BADL

There have been a lot of questions about the BADL about rights, why we're collecting work, etc.

In brief:
Rights: We will not own the rights to whatever we reproduce on the digital library. If you have any questions about who owns the rights to your work, please consult whatever contract you've signed with your studio/publisher/etc. We do not know who owns the rights to your work, but in most cases even if you've published/performed your work, you still own the rights unless a contract specifically states otherwise.

Reason: This is a project we're doing for school. It may be online for a few months or a few years, and is merely a prototype. If someone wants to maintain it after we get it going, then we can discuss that at a future date.

Collection: We're collecting work just as we would for a normal library, so don't worry about your work being "judged." We want to represent as broad a sample of Buffalo arts as possible.

Project Description

Buffalo Arts Digital Library will be a digital library of contemporary artistic production in Buffalo. Made as part of a semester-long group project for UB's Digital Libraries course, it is meant to be a prototype for further development that will include the work dozens of Buffalo artists; as such, it is not a complete view of the enormously productive arts scene in Buffalo. Watch this space for a Call for Work and other updates including interviews with featured Buffalo artists!
